Laboratory of Chemical Analysis (LCA)

1972-10-01: The Laboratory of Chemical Analysis was founded.

In 1972 Roger Verbeke was promoted from "geassocieerd docent" to "docent"

and to director of the laboratory of Chemical Analysis of Food from Animal Origin.

(Abbreviated LCA)

The aim was to enhance the Chemical Knowledge of Food of Vets..
Therefore a course of Chemical Analysis was introduced in the 3° Master.

Also a new specialised Master (after Master) Veterinary Food Inspection

was created later.

 

LCA was first and partly accommodated within the Laboratory of Physiology

(Prof. Dr. G. Peeters) (R. Verbeke worked previously in Lab Physiology)

LCA has one lab within Physiology, one in the basement and

one on the second floor next to a small office for R. Verbeke

 (This picture dates from 1983, no earlier pictures available)

1973-09-01: Hubert De Brabander joined LCA.

The first Focus was on the analysis of residues of thyreostats

 

Use of thyreostats was widespread at that time (above: Goiter due to thyreostats.)

A new TLC method with fluorescence detection from LCA

enhances the controle on the abuse of thyreostats in cattle fattening.

 

1974-03-03: PhD of Hubert De Brabander

 

(in the Faculty of Sciences; group Chemistry ;

promotors Lucien Van Poucke  & Zoël Eeckhout)

During his PhD Hubert DB learned also to work with computers

At that time UGent had only one computer: "the" computer.

An IBM 360/30 and staff who followed a training and an exam

could use that computer outside of office hours

1974-07-01: Master Environmental Sciences of Hubert DB

(at the "Interfacultair Centrum voor Milieusanering", UGent)

Hubert DB followed this master in a "part-time" form over 2 years.

1985-01-01: Start of small personal computer centre at the Faculty

In 1984 the Faculty asked Hubert DB to start up a small computer class

on behalve of all Faculty members

At that moment here was a choice between Wang, Olivetti and Apple.

Two Apple Macintosch XL (converted LISAs) were purchased.

The class was organised and regularly updated bij Hubert DB

and LCA  (a.o. Antoine Verbeke) untill

personal computers are more widespread in the Faculty.

1986-04-26: CHERNOBYL DISASTER

a nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat in the north of the Ukrainian SSR in the Soviet Union.^[

 

1986-06-23: Roger Verbeke was taken from us

after a short period of illness ;

HDB had to take over the examinations of 3° Master and Master "Veterinary Food Inspection"

and was appointed to the examination commissions.
For the first time the computer was used for the deliberation of the 3° Master. (bij Hubert DB)

A Workgroup for improvement of methods for residues of (anti-) hormones.

Saskia Sterk, Linda Stolker........)

RIVM became CRL (EU Reference Laboratory)

In 2010 RIKILT merged with RIVM for residue purposes and CRL

 

1987-01-01: IVK was founded ; start of more intense control on illegal growth promotors
